The Tungabhadra Dam is constructed across the Tungabhadra River, a tributary of the Krishna River. It is a multipurpose dam serving irrigation, power generation, flood control and recreational needs.

Due to its magnificence and splendor it is recognized as a great tourist attraction. This is a view of the dam from Vaikuntha Hills in peak monsoon when 31 of the 33 sluice gates are open. At the foot of the dam is Brindavan Garden (a replica of Mysore gardens) and a Japanese style garden on its margins.
