The NH 169 is a 708 km long highway that runs from Solapur in Maharashtra to the port city of Mangalore in Karnataka. The road passes through stretches of Western Ghats mountains which is a biodiversity hotspot. Because of conservation concerns its widening in certain sections has been held up. As an alternative, a proposal to pass the highway through tunnels is under active consideration.
