The Alfred High School (also known as Mohandas Gandhi High School) in Rajkot is one of the oldest institutions in India today.
This school was constructed during British rule in India by political agent Kernel Singh. This was the first English school in the Saurashtra (region), which was originally called Rajkot English School was founded on October 17, 1853. It later became a full fledged high school By 1868 AD. It came to be known as the Rajkot High School in 1886. It was named Alfred High School in the late 1907. The present buildings of the Alfred High School were built for Kathiawar by HH Nawab of Junagadh in memory of Prince Alfred, the Duke of Edinburgh. This School was opened in January, 1875 by H.E. Sir Philip Wodehouse, KCB & GCSI, Governor of Bombay.
Mohandas Gandhi did his schooling from Alfred High School. The name Alfred High School was changed to "Mohandas Gandhi High School" after India's independence, as Gandhiji took his primary education in this school.
