Monuments: Beautiful Structures and Sculptures in Cancellations
The word-Monument comes from the Latin "monere," which means 'to remind' or 'to warn.' The term is often used to describe any structure that is a significant and legally protected historic work, which often include relatively recent buildings constructed for residential or industrial purposes, with no thought at the time that they would come to be regarded as "monuments".
In the thematic varieties of Cancellations, there is one interesting subject of Monuments having beautiful structures and sculptures of historical importance. These Monuments have their own story and history. They are landmark monuments which have been created for thousands of years, and are often the most durable and famous symbols of ancient civilizations. It is a type of structure either explicitly created to commemorate a person or important event or which has become important to a social group as a part of their remembrance of historic times or cultural heritage, or simply as an example of historic architecture.
Mostly such cancellations highlighting the monuments are given on various events like philatelic exhibitions and fairs. However India Post has tried to give a specific dimension to such cancellations showing monuments at specific places of historical importance. They are known as Permanent Pictorial Cancellations. It is observed that such cancellations depict an image of the monument with date and monument’s name. Sometimes, other information like place, post office, pin codes etc. are not seen on all cancellations.
A specific attempt is made here to present that aspect of cancellation which bears a Monument having beautiful structure or sculpture which has history and is with or without heritage status. These cancellations are very artistic and attractive with all its intricacies in graphic design and drawing in the die-mold of the cancellation.
