Kovvuru Town is situated on the west bank of the Godavari River. It houses a small shrine of Gowthama Maharishi, who, to atone for his sin of killing of the holy cow, prayed to Ganga to flow as Dakshina Ganga in order to pass over the dead cow and hence this place is also called Goshpada Kshetram. There are four bridges across the Godavari River linking Kovvuru with Rajamundry, namely - Sir Arthur Cotton Bridge (decommissioned in 1997), Rail-cum-Road Bridge (1974), Godavari Arch Bridge built by Railways (1997) and the latest new Road Bridge now opened for traffic.
