Description
:

Known as Bajra in Hindi, it is the most widely grown type of millet. Pearl millet was domesticated in Africa around 2000 8.C and it spread subsequently to India. It is well adapted to areas characterized by drought, low soil fertility and high temperature.

Pearl millet is traditionally used for food products like roti (flat bread), bhakri (stiff roti), and porridge. Pearl millet flour mixed with wheat flour is used for making bakery products like breads, cakes, cookies and biscuits. The crop residue after grain harvest is a valuable source of fodder for livestock.

India is the largest producer of pearl millet.
