This is an unusual FDC. Officially Madras City was declared to be called as Chennai on 17-7-1998. The then Chief Minister of Tamilnadu Mr Karunanidhi declared this in State Assembly. Hence till 16-7-1998 Madras City was known as Madras and accordingly the date cancellation of Madras is correctly shown on Aruna Asaf Ali Stamp. But an Official cancellation of Aruna Asaf Ali shows the date of 16-7-1998 with Chennai as the place of Cancellation. As such on 16-7-1998, it should have been Madras. Both the cancellations are on the same cover showing same date but different names of the same place. The collector with creativity has made this cover with great efforts.
