Mount Everest (29,028 ft.), the highest mountain peak in the world, had defied many former attempts of man to set his foot on it. It was finally conquered on 29th May, 1953 by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tensing Norgey, members of a British expedition. A set of two stamps issued to commemorate the event shows a view of Mount Everest.
