The 3rd World Table Tennis Championships being held in Calcutta from 6th to 16th February, 1975, is one of the biggest sporting events ever held in this country. About 800 top table tennis stars from 62 countries will be matching their skill and vying for the championships.
The World Table Tennis Championships have been held annually from 1927 to 1939 and from 1947 to 1957, and thereafter biennially from 1959.
The first championships held in London in 1927 included participants from Austria, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, England, Germany, Hungary, India, Sweden and Wales. In subsequent years the championships were held in various countries. In 1952, India had the privilege of holding it in Bombay with 19 nations participating in it. Twenty-three years later, India is once again having this privilege of hosting the championships.
The championships will be held at the new Netaji Subhas Indoor Stadium which is the largest indoor stadium in India, Enthusiasts of table tennis can look forward to an exciting and memorable fare at Calcutta.
