The ISI was founded in 1855 as an international association for securing international comparability of statistical data. Since then its aims have widened considerably to 'promoting the use of statistical methods, the training of statisticians,.... and in the furthering of international statistical relations. Its present membership, including three specialized sections, consists of about 2000 statisticians from 125 countries. About 800 delegates are expected to participate i the Delhi Session. The Indian Posts and Telegraphs Department is happy to bring out a commemorative stamp to mark this important occasion.
