Philately is a very interesting and educative hobby. The postage stamps depict with refeshing clarity, various facts of the life, culture and heritage of different nations. An exhibition of postage stamps is an attemp at recreating a world of nature's beauties, man's achievements in arts, science and historic events. It opens new opportunities for serious collectors to present their collections and helps the young and the new to enter the fascinating world of philately. Since independence, Indian P & T Department has made pioneering efforts in promoting philately through exhibitions.
To celebrate the centenary of Indian Postage Stamp. The first International Stamp Exhibition was held in New Delhi in 1954, the first national exhibition was held in 1970 in New Delhi, the second in Calcutta (1975), the third in Bangalore (1977) and the last one at New Delhi (1982). An International Exhibition, INDIPEX-73 was held in New Delhi in 1973. The first international exhibition under the aegeis of the Federation Internationale de Philatelie was INDIA-80, held in New Delhi in 1980.
The first and perhaps the only all Asia exhibition, ASIANA-77 was held in 1977 in Bangalore. Circle level exhibitions are being organised by the various Postmasters General in their respective circles. Besides, private Philatelic Clubs/ Associations are also organising philatelic exhibitions to promote philately. The 5th India National Philatelic Exhibition, 1986 is being held at City Palace, Jaipur from 14 Feb. 1986 to 19 Feb. 1986 under the auspices of the Department of Posts in co-operation with the Philatelic Congress of India. The response to the exhibition has been over-whelming. About 350 exhibitors will display their exhibits in about 1200 frames.
Besides, a good number of dealers, booths and stalls will also be provided. To mark this occasion the Department of Posts is issuing 2 stamps of 200p and 50p denominations.
