Mohan Lal Sukhadia was born on 31st July, 1916, at Jhalawar.  He was the son of Shri Purshottam Das Sukhadia. Completing his initial studies at Nathdwara and Udaipur, he studied  Electrical  Engineering  at Bombay.

He was actively associated with the Praja Mandai movement and was drawn to the freedom struggle in his student days. During the Quit  India  Movement  he  was imprisoned  for 1 1/2 years. He became the Minister of Civil Supplies, the Public Works Department, Relief and Rehabilitation in the former Mewar State (Udaipur) in 1946. He was associated with Thakkar Bapa's welfare schemes for the upliftment of  downtrodden  people  in  Rajasthan.

After the formation of the state of Rajasthan, he joined the State Cabinet as Development Minister in  1948. In 1951-52 he was Minister for Civil Supplies, Agriculture and Irrigation. In the first general elections, held in 1952, Sukhadia, elected to the Rajasthan Assembly, became Minister for Revenue, Agriculture and Famine Relief. On 13th November, 1954 he became Chief Minister of Rajasthan, holding this office till  1971.

As Chief Minister he was the guiding force behind land reforms and the introduction of the Panchayati Raj in the State. The problem of making Rajasthan a cohesive state was faced by him with equanimity. The planned development and industrialisation of Rajasthan was under­taken during his Chief Ministership. He also encouraged the expansion of education and medical and health services in the State. He was nominated a Member of the Working Committee  of  the  AICC  in  1961.

In the period between 1972 and 1977 he was appointed the Governor of Kamataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. In  1980 he was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Udaipur Parliamentary  Constituency.

He passed  away on 2nd Feb.  1982.
