Unlike the past, when nations were dictated by Kings or a few Statesmen, the world today is preponderously democratic where people have the opportunity to attain a real, positive command, here and now, over a vast array of future events. There is a growing conviction that we can really shape the future; a future ensuring equality, all round prosperity, happiness and fulfillment. All this, however, can be achieved only if there is an international order where peace reigns supreme.
We dwell on history to draw lessons for mankind and to realise our past mistakes and to plan for a better tomorrow. History has repeatedly borne out that there is no substitute for world peace if mankind is to progress both materially and spiritually. If all men are to be born equal and are to attain fulfillment and happiness in their lives, this goal can be achieved only when there is harmony among nations, religions and races.
Wars, in ultimate analysis, do not produce any winners. All victories are transient. Instead of solving problems, they create more. Present wars lay foundations for future wars. Problems, feuds, crises are best solved by meeting of minds and consensus. International opinion can be the guiding factor.
From Buddha to Gandhi, India has always stood for universal brotherhood, tolerance, fraternity and harmony. This message of peace has been repeated by various apostles of peace from time to time. Never before the need for international peace has been felt more acutely than now when mankind is witnessing a devastating war.
Whilst war is a scourge, peace is a blessing. To draw attention to this noble sentiment, the Department of Posts is issuing a special stamp dedicated to World Peace.
