Khuda Bakhsh Library established in 1891 by Khuda Bakhsh Khan, has emerged as an exceptional centre for Oriental studies, Indian art and culture today. It was declared as an institution of national importance by an Act of Parliament in 1969.

The library, which has been functioning as an autonomous institution, attracts scholars from all over the world who visit the library for its invaluable collection of Arabic, Persian and Urdu manuscripts and original paintings of the Mughal, Iranian and Turkish schools. Besides the acquisition and the preservation of manuscripts, the library is a centre of intensive research and brings out a monthly research journal.

International seminars, specially those involving SAARC Countries, and Research Congresses have become regular features of the library. The Library has also instituted National, Visiting, Senior and Junior Fellowships for the purpose of research based on the wealth of material available with it. The inter lingual translations under-taken by the library have made a deep impact in fostering national integration and communal harmony.

The Department of Posts is privileged in bringing out a stamp on this famous institution. The stamp design shows the painting of the Taj Mahal selected from Badsha Nama, which is the complete history of the times of Shahjahan, from his birth to his death, by two different authors. This painting is unique because it is the oldest painting of the Taj.

The First Day Cover shows the remarks recorded by Mahatma Gandhi during his visit to the library in 1925.
