The Bharti Bhawan Library, Allahabad, was established on 15 December 1889 and since over a hundred years now, this institution has been an important centre of learning and public awakening.
Founded during the days of British- rule in India with the aim of bringing knowledge and education closer to the masses, the Library provided a unique collection of Hindi, Sanskrit and Urdu books under one roof.
In those early days, the Library came to be closely associated with the freedom movement's revolutionaries used to often meet here and those in Naini jail received regular supplies of books to read. Looked upon with suspicion by the British, the Library was regarded as a nursery of freedom fighters.
A pioneering institution dedicated to the public, the Bharti Bhawan Library has a fine treasure of old and rare books and valuable manuscripts that have inspired many generations of young men and women. Its development plans include extension of existing premises, opening of new branches, preservation of rare papers and manuscripts besides greater attention to the books and literature for women and children with a view, to inculcate and encourage the reading habit and foster a sense of national unity.
The Department of Post is privileged to bring out a postage stamp to commemorate this historic institution. The stamp design symbolizes the contribution of the Library to the dissemination and growth of knowledge. The design on the First Day Cover captures the ambiance of the library.
