Born in 1909, in Baseda, a small village in U.P. Dr. J.C. Jain lost his father in childhood, and the family endured a lot of poverty and hardship. He secured his primary education through Pathsha la and Gurukul. Thereafter, he continued his study of Sanskrit, Jain literature and Ayurveda at Benares Hindu University.
In 1929 he left studies and flung himself into the Satyagraha Movement launched by Mahatma Gandhi. Later he joined the Vishwabharati University at Shantiniketan as a research scholar. It was here that, in association with Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, he had his mental enrichment and realisation of the greatness of India's heritage. He began his career as a school teacher at Ajmer, then a princely state of British India. When the headmaster objected to his use of the Gandhi-cap, Dr. Jain preferred to leave the job. Much later, at the Ram Narain Ruia College, Bombay, Dr. Jain worked as Professor of Hindi, Sanskrit and Prakrit for well over 30 years. In 1948, he was the Chief Witness in the Gandhi Murder Trial held at the Red Fort, Delhi.
In 1970 Dr. Jain worked for 4 years as a Guest Professor on invitation at the Department of lndology in Kiel (Germany). In 1980 he went to Brazil to deliver lectures on Indian Philosophy. His book "Jainism" was translated into Portuguese.
A world renowned authority on Jain studies and Prakrit languages and literature, Dr. Jain authored more than 80 books besides numerous research articles. He was a recipient of a number of prestigious awards such as Soviet Land Nehru Award, the U.P. Government Award, the Jnan Bharati Award, the Ahimsa International Award etc.
