Description
:
Chaudhary Brahm Parkash (1918-1993), former Chief Minister of Delhi, was a leader known for his self-Jess public service, social commitment and organisational abilities.
Hailing from the village Shakarpur in Delhi, he started his public life with the local Congress Committee in 1936, at a time when the freedom struggle was moving towards its crescendo. He was assigned an important role in Mahatma Gandhi's Individual Satyagraha Movement of 1940.
Rural development and empowerment of the weaker and depressed sections of the society were causes close to Chaudhary Brahm Parkash's heart. With his long experience in public service and enormous insight into the realities of rural life, he was quick to realise the potential of cooperative societies in mitigating the hardships of the village folks. He started organising village and agriculture cooperatives as early as 1945. Strengthening the cooperative movement remained a life-long preoccupation for him. He was also a proponent of the Panchayati Raj institutions. He organised the National Union of Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Minorities in 1977 to work for the welfare of these weaker sections.
The Department of Posts is happy to issue a postage stamp honouring Chaudhary Brahm Parkash.
