A set of two stamps was brought out to pay homage to Kalidasa, the illustrious poet-dramatist of ancient India (400 A.D.). The date chosen for the issue was 22nd June, which corresponded to the first day of Asadha that year, on which the Yaksha in the 'Meghduta', while sojourning at Ramagiri, appealed to the Clouds to carry his message to his beloved at Alakapuri on Mount Kailas. This scene is depicted on the 15 np stamp. The Rs. 1.03 stamp features a scene from the 'Sakuntala', showing Sakuntala writing a letter to King Dusyanta from the hermitage of her adopted father, the sage Kanva.
